SCIENTIFIC NAME: Heliamphora tatei

COMMON NAME: Sunpitcher.

PLACE OF ORIGIN: The Tepuis, South America.

GENERAL INFO: Heliamphora tatei is one of the largest species of sun pitcher. This species grows a few active pitchers at a time, and as they die back the entire plant begins to rise upon a tall “stalk” of old pitchers. H.tatei can be seen by explorers from far away, presenting itself as a tall specimen many feet high! For this reason and the extra care requirements(more light and airflow), it may not be recommended for beginners.

WATER: The best way to water Heliamphora is to water the pitcher from overhead every few days until they over flow. The plants have overflow slits along the pitcher which allow rain to flood out and into the surrounding soil, while teeth-like hairs inside the pitchers prevent digested prey and nutrients from escaping. They receive copious amounts of rainfall and humidity in their natural habitat.

SOIL: We use a 60/40 perlite to peat for all Heliamphora. Some growers use pure long fibered sphagnum, but mind watering schedules to avoid root rot

CONTAINERS: Plastic or terracotta pots up to 6 inches works for this species. Drainage holes allowing full saturation watering or the tray method works best

LIGHT: Heliamphora should be pampered with as much light as possible! Utilize full spectrum LEDs or only the brightest of southern facing windows in southern hemisphere climates. Sun pitchers as the name implies, require almost exhausting quantities of light each day!

FERTILIZATION: We recommend using MAXSEA brand fertilizer for all carnivorous plants. The plants will naturally catch pests, and these can be
‘fed’ to the plant by simply dropping them into the pitcher. Fertilize once every 2 weeks in spring
and summer, and once a month in winter. Never let fertilizer touch flowers
